How Should Jeans Fit? Measuring and Jeans Size Chart Guide
Jeans should fit flat at the waist with no gap at the back, follow the seat without pulling, leave a little room at the thigh and end at the right length for your shoes. Rigid denim gives with wear, so if you are between sizes, take the smaller. In stretch denim, take your usual size.
Jeans fit checklist
| Area | Good fit | Signs it is wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Waist | Sits flat, two fingers fit inside | Gap at the back, or a muffin top |
| Rise | Sits where you want it, no bunching at the zip | Pulling at the crotch, or excess fabric in front |
| Seat | Follows your shape, pockets centered | Smile lines under the seat, or sagging |
| Thigh | A small pinch of fabric | Horizontal creases, or the fabric strains |
| Inseam | Right length for the cut and shoes | Heavy stacking you did not intend, or too short |
How should jeans fit at the waist?
The waistband should sit flat all the way around. You should be able to slide two fingers in comfortably, no more. A gap at the back usually means the waist is too big for your hips. Try a smaller size or a cut with more curve. If you need a belt to hold them up, they are too big.
What rise should jeans have?
Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. It decides where the jeans sit. A high rise sits at or above the navel and suits wide and flare legs. A mid rise sits just below the navel and works for almost everything. A low rise sits on the hips. Shop by rise: high, mid or low.
How should jeans fit in the seat and thigh?
The seat should follow your shape without stretching flat or hanging loose. Back pockets should sit centered on each side. Curved lines that point toward the seat, often called smile lines, mean the jeans are too tight there. In the thigh, you should be able to pinch a little fabric. If you cannot, try a straight or relaxed cut. See straight jeans or relaxed jeans.
How long should jeans be?
The inseam is measured from the crotch seam to the hem. Straight and slim jeans look best touching the top of the shoe with a slight break. Wide-leg and flare jeans should be longer, nearly grazing the floor in the shoes you will wear. Cropped and ankle styles should end at or just above the ankle bone.
How should jeans fit when sitting?
Sit down in them before you decide. The waistband should not dig in, and the back should not gap open. If the rise pulls hard when you sit, size up or try a higher rise. Jeans that only feel right standing will not get worn.
Rigid vs stretch denim: how to size
Rigid denim is mostly or all cotton. It feels firm at first and gives with wear, so if you are between sizes, take the smaller. Stretch denim contains some elastane. Take your usual size. Some brands have their own rules. 7 For All Mankind notes that its stretch runs true to size and eases slightly, while its rigid and vintage cuts should be your usual size, or one up if you are between sizes. Some Gucci women's styles and most DSQUARED2 styles use Italian or European sizes.
How to measure for jeans
Use a soft tape measure and wear thin clothing. Measure your waist where you want the jeans to sit. Measure your hips around the fullest part of the seat. For inseam, measure a pair of jeans that fits well, from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside leg. Then compare with our women's jeans size chart or men's jeans size chart.
Women's designer jeans usually come in waist sizes such as 23 to 34. Men's usually show waist and length, such as W32 L32. Returns are free within 30 days, so you can try a size at home. See shipping and returns.
Frequently asked questions
Should jeans be tight when you first buy them?
Rigid denim should feel snug but not painful, because it gives with wear. If you are between sizes in rigid denim, take the smaller. Stretch denim should fit comfortably from the start, since it can ease slightly but will not change much. In either fabric, you should be able to sit and bend without strain.
How do I know my jeans size?
Measure your waist where you want the jeans to sit, your hips at the fullest point, and the inseam of a pair that fits well. Compare those numbers with the brand's size on our size chart. If a brand uses Italian or European sizes, use the chart to convert to waist inches.
Should I size up or down in designer jeans?
It depends on the fabric. In rigid denim, size down if you are between sizes, because it gives with wear. In stretch denim, take your usual size. Some brands differ: 7 For All Mankind suggests your usual size or one up in its rigid and vintage cuts if you are between sizes.
How should men's jeans fit?
Men's jeans should sit flat at the waist without a belt doing the work, follow the seat without sagging, and leave a little room in the thigh. Length should touch the shoe with a slight break for straight and slim cuts. Relaxed cuts can sit a little longer and wider through the leg.
