Skinny jeans follow the leg from hip to ankle and rely on stretch to move with you. A high rise gives a smooth line under fitted tops, while a mid rise sits more naturally under longer layers. Black and dark washes look the most polished.
They are easiest to wear with longer tops that balance the narrow leg: oversized shirts, long knits, blazers and coats. They are also the best cut to tuck into tall boots. With ankle boots or sneakers, keep the hem at or just above the ankle.
If you want a little more ease, slim fit jeans keep a narrow line without the cling, and straight-leg jeans are the most common alternative. Skinny jeans stretch with wear, so check the women's size chart and choose the snugger size if you are between two.
Skinny jeans are still worn in 2026, though looser cuts such as straight, wide-leg and barrel are now more common. They remain practical with tall boots and long layers, and black skinny jeans in particular are still a regular choice.
Skinny jeans should hug the leg from hip to ankle without wrinkling at the knee or pulling across the thigh. The waist should close without a gap at the back. They stretch with wear, so a snug first fit is normal.
Ankle boots, tall boots, loafers, ballet flats and low sneakers all work with skinny jeans. Tall boots can be pulled on over the jeans. With ankle boots, a slightly cropped or turned-up hem keeps the line clean and avoids bunching at the shaft.
