Choose the cut first. Straight-leg jeans are the easiest to wear and suit most body types. Wide-leg and baggy jeans give a looser, current shape. Slim and skinny cuts work best with chunky shoes or boots worn over the top.
Then choose the rise. High rise sits at or near the natural waist and pairs well with tucked tops. Mid rise sits just below the navel and is the most common rise for men. Low rise sits on the hips and has returned in looser cuts.
Fabric matters too. Rigid, 100% cotton denim softens and molds to you over time, so buy it snug. Stretch denim with a little elastane feels comfortable from day one but can relax by about half a size. Check the women's size chart or men's size chart for each brand before ordering.
Jeans should sit at the waist without a gap at the back and without digging in when you sit. The seat should follow your shape without pulling, and the thighs should allow movement. The hem should land at the ankle bone for cropped cuts or just touch the top of the shoe for full-length styles.
Measure your natural waist and hips with a soft tape and compare them with the brand's size chart. Most designer jeans use waist sizes in inches, while some European houses use Italian or French sizing. If you are between sizes, size down in stretch denim and up in rigid denim.
For jeans that keep their shape, look for 1 to 2% elastane. That gives comfort without the fabric bagging out at the knees. Over 2% feels softer and closer to a jegging. Fully rigid 100% cotton denim has no stretch and molds to your body with wear.
Yes, if you wear jeans often. Designer denim generally uses better cotton, more precise patterns and stronger stitching, so the fit holds up and the wash ages well. Cost per wear over several years is often lower than buying cheaper pairs that lose their shape quickly.
