How Burberry began

Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in Basingstoke, England, in 1856, outfitting people for life outdoors. In 1879 he developed gabardine, a breathable, weatherproof fabric that changed outerwear, and the house went on to make the trench coat, the garment that has defined it ever since.
