Jean Paul Gaultier showed his first collection in Paris in 1976 and went on to become fashion's great provocateur, its celebrated enfant terrible. He brought the Breton stripe, corsetry and street culture onto the runway, challenged ideas about gender and beauty, and treated clothing as a way to play.
